The City of Jonesboro announces the resignation of Mayor Day

 

(JONESBORO/GEORGIA) – At the Jonesboro City Council Regular Meeting held on Monday, August 8, 2022, the longtime Mayor of the City of Jonesboro, announced that she is resigning her position effective Tuesday, August 16, 2022.

At the Council meeting, Mayor Day, who was first elected in 1996, made the following statement:
“The City of Jonesboro has been a positive force in my life: thank you for the work, the opportunity, the chance to be creative and to feel a sense of accomplishment, not to mention the tears and the laughter along the way. Effective, Tuesday, August 16, 2022, at the close of business, I will resign as Mayor of Jonesboro, Georgia. I do this with a heavy heart and mixed feelings, but a surety that it is the best decision for my loved ones and for me, as I relocate to be nearer to my son and his family. Goodnight, City of Jonesboro, from your biggest fan!”

The City Manager along with other Councilmembers present also applauded Mayor Day for her work on behalf of the City.

During her tenure, Mayor Day has stayed active in the Georgia Municipal Association and participated in a GMA Roundtable concerning the need for increased interaction between municipalities and boards of education in Georgia. She has served as District Vice President and President for the Georgia Municipal Association. Mayor Day has been recognized by the Georgia Municipal Association with the Certificate of Achievement, the Certificate of Excellence, and the Certificate of Distinction. She served five terms as President of the Clayton County Municipal Association. Mayor Day has received many community accolades including Clayton County Chamber of Commerce Business Woman of the Year, Battalion Chief, State Fire Marshal Corps, Divine Faith Ministries Commitment to Excellence Award, Woodman of the World Community Service Award, and Grassroots Leadership Institute 2018 Inspiration Award. She was named a Living Legend by We Are Clayton Magazine in 2016. Under Mayor Day’s leadership, the City of Jonesboro was awarded the 2016 Development of Excellence, LCI Achievement Award from the Atlanta Regional Commission. Further, under her leadership, she has been a catalyst for the revitalization efforts of Jonesboro. She serves on the Superintendent’s High Performing Advisory Board, Clayton County Schools. Mayor Day serves on both the Governance Committee and the Board of the Atlanta Regional Commission. She is also on the Board of Southern Regional Medical Center.

At this time, the City has not begun a discussion on Special Election proceedings. An official celebration to honor Mayor Day will be held in conjunction with the opening of the City Center on October 22, 2022. Further event details will be announced.
